Book Suggestions

Postby CathyB on Thu May 08, 2008 4:43 pm

I thought I would start the discussion on book ideas. I would be interested in reading "As I Lay Dying" (Faulkner). But I am INCREDIBLY flexible, so if everyone 1) has already read this, or 2)has no interest in it, please say something. I look forward to hearing everyone else's suggestions!

Here's an idea, and again, it depends on if everyone has read it and has grown tired of the book, but why don't we start with Fahrenheit 451 as an introduction to banned books and censorship? Has everyone already read it?

Hey All! I have read "As I Lay Dying", but it was in High School, and I remember really enjoying it, so I wouldn't be opposed to re-reading it more for pleasure...or Fahrenheit. I'm quite flexible and very excited for this whole thing! I can't wait 'til it takes off! I start looking into suggestions for round two :)

Either of those works for me, as I haven't read either one. :)

I am interested in reading Fahrenheit 451 as well as the Faukner. But I think the idea of starting with a book that discusses the idea of censorship might be a nice way to kick things off.

 (In case you're interested: another beautiful read about book censorship is Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai. I believe it was banned in China, and was also turned into a movie.)

I agree with Lindsay, and I also really like her book suggestion. Should we read that after Fahrenheit 451?

Beautiful. Keep the book suggestions coming! I was hoping we could each be responsible for coming up with one of the books we read, but let's keep the suggestions flowing!

Are we decided then that we'll kick-start our reading with Fahrenheit 451?

I don't mean to hurry this thing along, but could we try and pick our next two books as well? My husband and I are heading to Ghana for three months two weeks from tomorrow, and Id like to purchase the books before we go. Thanks! (Again, sorry...I don't mean to be pushy :) )

Here's an idea for later....once we have done a round or two of banned books, we could consider adding books from the ALA's Most Challenged Database. As it is along the same lines, but will be a bit more expansive. Here's more info: http://www.ala.org/ala/oif/bannedbooksw ... d.cfm#wdcb

The ALA includes challenged books in their "Banned Book Week".

Just an idea.
